ชื่อปลากระดูกอ่อนพวกหนึ่ง มีหลายชนิด หลายสกุล และหลายวงศ์ ทั้งขนาดเล็กและขนาดใหญ่ ลำตัวกว้างตั้งแต่ ๑๕-๓๐๐ เซนติเมตร ลำตัวแบนลงมาก และต่อเนื่องกับครีบอกแผ่ออกด้านข้าง บางชนิดแผ่ออกไปจดด้านหน้าและด้านท้ายเกือบเป็นวงกลมดูคล้ายจานหรือว่าว บางชนิดแผ่ยื่นด้านข้างออกไปเป็นปีกคล้ายนกหรือผีเสื้อ และบางชนิดครีบอกแผ่ไปไม่ถึงส่วนหน้า ทำให้หัวแยกจากลำตัวและส่วนยื่นของหัวเป็นลอน มีเหงือก ๕ คู่ อยู่ด้านล่างของส่วนหัว บริเวณถัดจากส่วนท้ายของนัยน์ตามีรูเปิดข้างละช่อง ซึ่งด้านในติดต่อกับโพรงเหงือกและปาก หางส่วนมากเรียว สั้นบ้างยาวบ้าง มักมีผิวหยาบหรือขรุขระ บางพวกมีเงี่ยงอยู่บนหางตอนใกล้ลำตัว และมีต่อมน้ำพิษอยู่บริเวณโคนเงี่ยง เมื่อใช้เงี่ยงแทงจะปล่อยน้ำพิษออกมาด้วย ทำให้คนหรือสัตว์ที่ถูกแทงรู้สึกปวด

(n.) Name for a group of cartilaginous fishes, comprising many species, genera, and families, both small and large. The body width ranges from 15 to 300 centimeters, is very flattened, and merges with the pectoral fins that extend outward. Some species have fins that extend almost into a circle, resembling a disc or kite; others have side fins that look like wings of birds or butterflies; and some have pectoral fins that do not reach the front, making the head distinct from the body, with the head's extension forming ridges. They have five pairs of gills located underneath the head. Behind the eyes, there is an opening on each side connecting to the gill cavity and mouth. The tail is usually slender, sometimes short or long, often with rough or coarse skin. Some have a spine near the base of the tail with a venom gland; when the spine is used to sting, venom is released, causing pain to humans or animals.
