(n.) Name for several small shrimp species of various genera, such as genus Alpheus in the family Alpheidae. They have two large claws, one much larger than the other, capable of producing a loud sound by snapping the claw, especially when striking a vessel, hence the name 'snapping shrimp'. They hide among materials along the shore in both salt and brackish water, except for Alpheus microrhynchus De Man, which is also found in fresh water. Also called 'krato'.
