Ant; any of numerous species in the family Formicidae, characterised by the first abdominal segment, or both the first and second abdominal segments adjoining the thorax, being constricted into a narrow petiole bearing a dorsal node - a feature distinguishing ants from wasps (ต่อ, แตน) and termites (ปลวก). Species vary in form, colour, and odour; they travel in trails to transport food or relocate nests. They are social insects living in colonies divided into queens (มดนางพญา), males (มดผู้), and workers (มดงาน); worker ants are sterile females that build the nest, rear larvae, and forage for food. When disturbed, some species defend themselves by stinging and releasing formic acid, or by biting and secreting acid into the wound, causing irritation or pain.
