ชื่อปลาผิวนํ้าทุกชนิด ในวงศ์ Belonidae และ Hemiramphidae ลำตัวกลมยาวคล้ายปลาเข็ม กระดูกปากทั้งตอนบนและล่างหรือเฉพาะตอนล่างยื่นยาวแหลม หางเป็นแฉก บ้างก็ตัดเฉียงลงมากน้อยหรือกลมแล้วแต่ชนิดหรือสกุล ส่วนใหญ่พบในเขตนํ้ากร่อยหรือชายทะเล เช่น ชนิดในสกุล Hemiramphus, Hyporhamphus, Rhynchorhamphus, Tylosurus, Strongyluraและ Zenarchopterusชนิดที่พบในทะเลห่างฝั่งและบริเวณรอบเกาะ คือ กระทุงเหวบั้ง [ Ablennes hians (Valenciennes)] ซึ่งมีชุกชุมที่สุด บางชนิดพบอาศัยอยู่ในนํ้าจืด เช่น กระทุงเหวเมือง [ Xenentodon cancila (Hamilton)] ขนาดยาวได้ถึง ๑.๒๕ เมตร, เข็ม ก็เรียก.

(n.) The name for all surface-dwelling fish species in the families Belonidae and Hemiramphidae. They have long, cylindrical bodies resembling needlefish, with upper and lower jawbones (or only the lower) extended into a sharp point. The tail is forked, sometimes obliquely cut or rounded depending on species or genus. Mostly found in brackish or coastal waters, such as species in the genera Hemiramphus, Hyporhamphus, Rhynchorhamphus, Tylosurus, Strongylura, and Zenarchopterus. The most common offshore and island species is Ablennes hians (Valenciennes). Some species are found in freshwater, such as Xenentodon cancila (Hamilton), which can reach up to 1.25 meters in length.
