ชื่อนกขนาดเล็กถึงขนาดกลางหลายชนิด ในวงศ์ Alcedinidae หัวโต คอสั้น ปากแหลม ยาว ตรง แบนข้าง และแข็งแรง หากินโดยวิธีพุ่งตัวลงจับเหยื่อเช่นปลาในนํ้าหรือแมลงตามท้องทุ่ง พวกที่มีขนาดเล็กส่วนใหญ่มีสีสวยสะดุดตา เช่น กระเต็นน้อยแถบอกดำ ( Alcedo euryzona Temminck) กระเต็นน้อยสามนิ้ว [ Ceyx erithacus (Linn.)] พวกที่มีขนาดกลาง เช่น กระเต็นลาย [ Lacedo pulchella (Horsfield)] กระเต็นอกขาว [ Halcyon smyrnensis (Linn.)] กระเต็นสร้อยคอสีน้ำตาล [ Actenoides concretus (Temminck)] และพวกที่มีขนาดใหญ่ เช่น กระเต็นขาวดำใหญ่ [ Megaceryle lugubris (Temminck)] กระเต็นปักหลักหรือปักหลัก [ Ceryle rudis (Linn.)].
