ผมหรือขนที่ขึ้นเวียนเป็นก้นหอย

(n.) Hair or fur that grows in a spiral pattern (whorl).

มิ่งมงคล, สิริ, ความดี, เช่น ขวัญข้าว ขวัญเรือน

Auspiciousness, fortune, virtue; e.g., khwan khao (spirit of rice), khwan ruean (spirit of the house).

สิ่งที่ไม่มีตัวตน เชื่อกันว่ามีอยู่ประจำชีวิตของคนตั้งแต่เกิดมา ถ้าขวัญอยู่กับตัวก็เป็นสิริมงคล เป็นสุขสบายจิตใจมั่นคง ถ้าคนตกใจหรือเสียขวัญ ขวัญก็ออกจากร่างไป ซึ่งเรียกว่า ขวัญหาย ขวัญหนี ขวัญบิน เป็นต้น ทำให้คนนั้นได้รับผลร้ายต่าง ๆ, เรียกผู้ตกใจง่ายคือ เด็กหรือหญิงซึ่งมักจะขวัญหายบ่อย ๆ ว่า ขวัญอ่อน , และอนุโลมใช้ไปถึงสัตว์หรือสิ่งของบางอย่าง เช่น ช้าง ม้า ข้าว เรือน ฯลฯ ว่ามีขวัญเช่นเดียวกับคนเหมือนกัน, โดยปริยายหมายความว่า ยอดกำลังใจ เช่น ขวัญเมือง ว่า ยอดกำลังใจของเมือง

An intangible entity believed to reside in a person's life from birth; if the khwan remains with the person, it brings auspiciousness, happiness, and mental stability. If a person is frightened or loses their khwan, it is said to leave the body (called khwan hai, khwan ni, khwan bin, etc.), resulting in various misfortunes. A person who is easily frightened, such as a child or woman, is called khwan on (having a weak spirit). By extension, animals or objects like elephants, horses, rice, or houses are also believed to have khwan. Figuratively, it means the highest morale, as in khwan mueang (the morale of the city).

Good morale; e.g., khwan di (having good spirit).

ผู้รู้พิธีทำขวัญ เรียกว่า หมอขวัญ

A person knowledgeable in the khwan-inviting ritual is called mo khwan (spirit doctor).

การทำพิธีเชิญขวัญหมายความว่า เรียกขวัญ มาอยู่กับตัว

The ritual of inviting the khwan to return to the person is called riak khwan (calling the spirit).

การเสียเงินค่าปรับให้แก่ผู้ถูกทำร้ายหรือถูกหมิ่นประมาท เรียกว่า ทำขวัญ

Payment of compensation to a person who has been harmed or insulted is called tham khwan.

เอาเส้นด้ายผูกข้อมือเด็กแล้วกล่าวเรียกขวัญว่า “ขวัญเอ๋ย มาอยู่กับเนื้อกับตัว” แล้วกล่าวให้พรต่อไปตามควร เรียกว่า ผูกขวัญ

Tying a thread around a child's wrist while reciting an invocation to the khwan, such as 'Khwan oei, come stay with your body,' followed by a blessing, is called phuk khwan (tying the spirit).

เรียกขวัญหรือเชิญขวัญ เรียกว่า รับขวัญ

To call or invite the khwan is called rap khwan (receiving the spirit).

ทำพิธี เช่น รดนํ้ามนตร์ให้ เสกเป่าให้ หรือกล่าวปลุกใจต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้ขวัญดีมีใจกล้าหาญ เรียกว่า บำรุงขวัญ

To perform rituals such as sprinkling holy water, chanting, or giving words of encouragement to strengthen the khwan and instill courage is called bamrung khwan (nourishing the spirit).

สิ่งของที่ให้แก่เจ้าของขวัญเมื่อเสร็จพิธีทำขวัญแล้ว หรือสิ่งของที่ให้กันในเวลาอื่นเป็นการถนอมขวัญหรือเพื่ออัธยาศัยไมตรี เรียกว่า ของขวัญ

An item given to the owner of the khwan after the ritual, or given at other times as a gesture of care or friendship, is called khong khwan (gift).

ข้าวบายศรี เรียกว่า ข้าวขวัญ

Bai Sri ceremonial rice is called khao khwan.

ไข่ปอกที่เสียบไม้ปักไว้บนยอดบายศรี เรียกว่า ไข่ขวัญ , ไข่ข้าว ก็เรียก

A peeled egg skewered and placed atop the Bai Sri arrangement is called khai khwan; also called khai khao.

ลูกคนที่รักมากที่สุด เรียกว่า ลูกขวัญ

A most beloved child is called luk khwan.

A person who is the ultimate beloved, especially a woman, is called chom khwan.

คำยกย่องเรียกภรรยาอันเป็นที่รักว่า เมียขวัญ

An honorific term for a beloved wife: mia khwan.
