Two species of marine fish with large upward-turned eyes, a wide mouth, a single hard bony plate beneath the chin between the lower jaw bones, and a fairly slender, laterally compressed body: (1) the Indo-Pacific tarpon [*Megalops cyprinoides* (Broussonet)], family Megalopidae, up to 58 cm, with large scales and the last dorsal ray extended as a filament; and (2) the Hawaiian ladyfish [*Elops hawaiensis* (Regan)], family Elopidae, more slender, up to 60 cm.
