Name for several herbaceous plants in the genus Corchorus, family Tiliaceae, growing in lowlands; the bark is tough and, when stripped, is called 'jute', e.g., round-podded jute (C. capsularis L.) with round, wrinkled pods and edible leaves, called 'เส้ง' in Northern Thailand, and long-podded jute (C. olitorius L.) with long, ribbed pods; seeds of both are toxic. Jute is used to make sacks.
