กฺราบ

ไม้เสริมแคมเรือให้สูงขึ้น, ส่วนของเรือตอนที่มีไม้เสริม, ไม้กระดานที่ติดตรงแคมเรือไปตามแนวนอนสำหรับเดิน, เรียกส่วนด้านข้างของเรือรบเรือสินค้าเป็นต้น.

(n.) A plank added to the gunwale of a boat to increase its height; the part of a boat where such a plank is attached; a board fixed horizontally along the gunwale for walking; also refers to the side of warships, cargo ships, etc.

แสดงความเคารพด้วยวิธีนั่งประนมมือขึ้นเสมอหน้าผาก แล้วน้อมศีรษะลงจดพื้น, ถ้าหมอบแล้วน้อมศีรษะลงจดมือที่ประนมอยู่กับพื้น เรียกว่า หมอบกราบ, ประนมมือเสมอหน้าผาก แล้วน้อมศีรษะลงจดมือที่วางอยู่ ณ ที่ใดที่หนึ่ง ก็อนุโลมถือว่าเป็นกราบ เช่น กราบลงบนตัก, เรียกกราบโดยให้อวัยวะทั้ง ๕ คือ เข่าทั้ง ๒ มือทั้ง ๒ และหน้าผาก จดลงกับพื้นว่า กราบโดยเบญจางคประดิษฐ์ เป็นอาการแสดงความเคารพอย่างสูงสุด, โดยปริยายใช้เป็นคำแสดงอาการเคารพเหมือนอย่างกราบ เช่น กราบทูล กราบเรียน.

(v.) To show respect by sitting with hands pressed together at the forehead and bowing the head to the ground; if kneeling and bowing the head to the hands pressed together on the ground, it is called 'mob krap' (prostration); pressing the hands at the forehead and bowing the head to the hands placed anywhere is also considered 'krap', e.g., bowing onto one's lap; when the five body parts—both knees, both hands, and forehead—touch the ground, it is called 'krap by benjankapradit', the highest form of respect; figuratively used to express respect as in 'krap thun', 'krap rian'.
