(Bloch).

(n.) Name for several species and genera of marine fish in the family Serranidae (Epinephelidae). When small, called 'เก๋า'; medium to large sizes are called 'กะรัง' or 'หมอทะเล', with the largest called 'หมอทะเล'. These fish are generally elongated, robust, slightly compressed laterally, with rounded fins, and small scales covering the body and head. Body and fins are variously colored, often with spots, blotches, or stripes, changing with size; some species are entirely red or gray. Found on sea floors and coastal areas with hiding places, mostly near or in coral reefs. Species such as Epinephelus merra, E. sexfasiatus, Cephalopholis boenak reach up to 26 cm; Promicrops lanceolatus can reach up to 2.7 meters and is one of the largest bony fish in the world. The names 'เก๋า', 'ตุ๊กแก', and 'กะรัง' are commonly used for most species in this family that are not very large. 'กะรัง' and 'หมอทะเล' are used for larger fish, up to 0.5–1.5 meters, with 'หมอทะเล' specifically for Promicrops lanceolatus.
