Title prefixed to the name of a male who has reached the age of 15 or over; the standard civilian equivalent of 'Mr.' in Thai.

A superior, head, or employer, e.g., เขาเป็นนาย (he is the boss), นายไม่อยู่ (the boss is not in).

The head or chief of a particular office or function, e.g., นายตรวจ (inspector), นายทะเบียน (registrar); a supervisor or commander, e.g., นายหมู่ (squad leader), นายหมวด (platoon leader); a specialist or expert in a particular field, e.g., นายไปรษณีย์ (postmaster), นายช่าง (engineer, master craftsman).
