The wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo Linn. (family Meleagrididae): a large bird with a short, slender bill; blue head; and bare, warty skin on the head and neck. The male has a long, extensible, orange-red caruncle (snood) hanging from the forehead above the upper mandible, resembling an elephant's trunk; body plumage is iridescent blue-green shot with golden yellow. The female's snood is smaller and shorter; body feathers are brown and scale-patterned. Feeds on seeds, leaves, and small animals. Native to North America.
