A marine or brackish-water fish, Scatophagus argus (Linn.) (family Scatophagidae); body short and laterally compressed, with a blunt head, small mouth, rounded tail, and small rough scales; body colour highly variable - green, grey, or brown - the upper half darker with several dark grey or black transverse bars that break into spots on the lower body or are scattered as spots over the entire body; fins pale yellowish-grey. Also called กระทะ or เสือดาว (spotted scat).
