ผึ้ง

ชื่อแมลงหลายชนิดในวงศ์ Apidae มีปีกบางใส ๒ คู่ ปีกคู่หลังเล็กกว่าปีกคู่หน้า ปากใช้ทั้งกัดอาหารและดูดกินของเหลวได้ ปล้องท้องที่อยู่ติดกับส่วนอกเล็กมาก มีขนปกคลุมตามลำตัว เป็นแมลงสังคม อยู่รวมกันเป็นฝูง แบ่งชั้นวรรณะเป็นผึ้งนางพญา ผึ้งผู้ และผึ้งงาน ผึ้งงานมีถุงสำหรับเก็บเกสรดอกไม้ที่ขาหลัง และมีเหล็กในสำหรับต่อยปล่อยน้ำพิษ ทำให้เจ็บปวด ชนิดที่รู้จักกันแพร่หลายในประเทศไทย มี ๕ ชนิด เป็นผึ้งพื้นเมืองของประเทศไทย ๔ ชนิด คือ ผึ้งหลวง ( Apis dorsataFabricius) ผึ้งโพรง ( A. cerana Fabricius) ผึ้งมิ้ม ( A. florea Fabricius) และผึ้งม้าน ( A. andrenitormis Smith) ส่วนผึ้งที่เลี้ยงกันทั่วไปนำมาจากต่างประเทศ คือผึ้งพันธุ์ (A. mellifera Linn.), เผิ้ง ก็เรียก.

Name of several insect species in the family Apidae. They have two pairs of thin, transparent wings, with the hind pair smaller than the fore pair. Their mouthparts are used for both biting food and sucking liquids. The abdominal segment attached to the thorax is very small. The body is covered with hair. Bees are social insects, living together in colonies with caste divisions: queen bee, drone, and worker bee. Worker bees have pollen baskets on their hind legs and a sting for injecting venom, causing pain. In Thailand, five species are widely known; four are native: giant honey bee (Apis dorsata Fabricius), cavity-nesting honey bee (A. cerana Fabricius), dwarf honey bee (A. florea Fabricius), and black dwarf honey bee (A. andreniformis Smith). The commonly kept bee, imported from abroad, is the western honey bee (A. mellifera Linn.). Also called 'pheung'.
